Michael Gibilaro

Commercial Production

Michael joins the Advisory Board of GrowUp Urban Farms with 15 years’ experience in hydroponic farming. His family business in the Lee Valley, Villa Nursery, was founded in 1970 by his father and originally grew cucumbers.

Through new growing technologies, the business expanded in 1984 by building new aluminum glasshouses and, in an effort to increase harvest, introduced hydroponics. Villa Nursery now grows peppers under 14 acres of glass and supplies the major UK supermarkets, including their award winning salad and specialty peppers.

Michael and his brother Felice bring operational and food retailing supply-side experience. They are also at the forefront of alternative heating and lighting systems that will allow for more sustainable growing methods that reflect the ongoing need to be environmentally friendly.
